This website is dedicated to all those forgotten communities which, whether due to lousy planning, impossible dreams or rotten luck, just didn't make it.
What are ghost towns?
The Oxford dictionary describes ghost towns as communities that are in a state of abandonment or partial abandonment. Although many of the towns in this site continue to support small groups of residents, their numbers are definitely not growing.
Field trips form the basis for much of our content. We actually make a point of seeking out, visiting and researching these communities, rather than relying on existing work by others. This is evidenced in well over 1000 original photos from our visits that appear on this site.
About this site
Ghosttownpix.com was started by Jeri Danyleyko and Susan Foster in 1998 as Ghosttowns of Ontario. The name was changed in January 2000 to include the Alberta Ghost Towns section which was launched in June 2000. All the western Canada content was created by Johnnie Bachusky. Our northern Ontario content is provided by Yvan Charbonneau. Honorary contributors include the Reverend Dr. Paul Duarte.
Ghosttownpix.com is a gateway to our other sections on B.C., Alberta, Ontario, Northwest Territories and Saskatchewan. Other special features will be added from time to time.
Government efforts on preservation and protection of our history and heritage range from slim to non-existent. Ghosttownpix is dedicated to providing you with quality information on dying communities before they vanish forever.
We invite you to explore our site and share a bit of history with us.
